Mongozo

The word Mongozo means ‘cheers!’ in the language of the Chokwe people of Africa. Mongozo beer is all about enjoyment to the full and particularly about its surprising unique flavours.
Our beers are exotic: they have been developed using ingredients from exotic cultures. Some of the beers are based on traditional recipes and others are our own brew. There are five scintillating and exotic flavours available: Mango, Banana, Coconut, Quinua and Palmnut. In addition, Mongozo also produces a unique Fairtrade, organic and gluten-free premium pilsner.

Mongozo is sold in exotic restaurants, at festivals, at beach bars and restaurants, in supermarkets and off-licences and in Third World aid shops. For an up-to-date overview of points of sale, go to ‘Availability’ to find a Mongozo hotspot near you.

A BEER WITH A STORY TO TELL
Mongozo means ‘cheers’ in the native language of Henrique Kabia, one of the founders of Mongozo beer. It is the language of the Chokwe people who live scattered throughout Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It was one of Henrique Kabia’s distant great-grandmothers who was responsible for bringing about a great change in the eighteenth century: instead of making palm wine she began making palm beer. Over the centuries her recipe was handed down from mother to daughter. As there were no daughters in the Kabia family, Henrique’s mother decided to break with tradition and initiate her son into the mysteries of beer brewing. That same recipe was Henrique’s only possession when, in 1993, he arrived in the Netherlands as a refugee.

The recipe formed the basis for a new exotic beer range. In 1998, Henrique Kabia and Jan Fleurkens decided to join forces and market palm nut beer. In 2001 Mongozo Banana was launched, followed by Mongozo Quinua in 2003. Henrique Kabia was killed in a tragic accident in June 2003. The company has continued to develop in the same direction, just as Henrique Kabia would have wished. Mongozo Coconut was launched in the spring of 2005, followed by Mongozo Mango in 2008.

As an addition to the range of exotic beers it has on offer, Mongozo introduced a world first in 2010: Mongozo Premium Pilsner. This lager combines three unique elements - Fairtrade, organic and gluten-free – all in one bottle.
Cheers!
